Black Tie Optional

Most of the time, men’s formal dressing seems fairly straight forward in comparison to women’s. However, there are a few instances when an invitation’s dress code might throw a wrench in your event-focused fashion plans – “Black Tie Optional,” we’re looking at you. If you’ve received an invitation with this proclamation, there is no need to panic. The rules here are actually quite simple. Embrace your current wardrobe status and fashion preferences, while considering your affiliation with the event itself. If this is an event where you are included in a wedding party, a co-host of a charity, or looking to make an impression, it might be wise to don a tux. (Check back in for more information on renting vs buying a tux in the coming weeks!) However, if you are just a regular guest, we believe that when you are given an option, you should feel free to take it. Consider it an olive branch, now you can flex your decision making muscle as you won’t have to invest in (or rent) a tux. If you choose to skip the pomp and circumstance, keep it traditional by dressing in a formal, dark suit (black, dark gray, or navy are really the only colors you should consider for this dress code) paired with a white dress shirt, sophisticated tie, and appropriate dress shoes to complete the look.

All About the Break

Shopping for a new suit (or even jeans or chinos)? You might want to consider what type of break fits the style you’re going for as well as your body type. If you don’t know what a break is, no worries; we’re here to explain! The break is defined as the fold/creasing of the fabric above the bottom front of the pant leg where it hits your shoe. The more it hits your shoe (the longer the pant leg is) the more of a break there is, and the less it hits your shoe (the shorter the pant leg is) the less of a break there is. Pretty simple right? Now let’s look at the pros and cons to each. No break: This style ends at the ankles, giving your pants no opportunity to touch a shoe (meaning it will not crease or fold because it has nothing to knock into). This look is best for those with a slim or shorter build, or those going for a more modern, European, or youthful look. Medium break: This style just hits the shoe, and features a cuff. This is not to be used with a slim or tapered trouser. A medium brake is a more conservative look usually seen on business men, older men, or those who are carrying around some extra weight and want to make themselves appear more slender. Full break: This style features a longer length and significant pooling of fabric atop a shoe. It is featured on wide-leg trousers and dates back to a Jazz age look. Most commonly, you’d find this look on an older man, someone who is trying to hide extra weight, or someone who is going for a vintage look.

Brogan: The Original Work Boot

Brogan: The Original Work Boot

Chances are you’ve never heard of a “brogan” but you’ve probably owned at least one pair in your lifetime. The brogan shoe is believed to have originated in Scotland and Ireland in the 16th century and comes from the Old Irish word “bróc” which means shoe. A brogan is an ankle-length, lace-up shoe/boot hybrid; it is too tall to be a shoe and too short to be considered a boot. Originally, the brogan was constructed of heavy untanned leather and was used as a work boot in the wet bogs of the Irish and Scottish countryside. The brogan continued to evolve and became very popular during the English Civil War when soldiers were issued brogan shoes as part of their uniform. These shoes continued to serve as military footwear throughout the American Revolutionary War. A few years later, when Thomas Jefferson wore brogans at his 1801 inauguration, the style catapulted to a fashion trend, and the shoes became known as “Jeffersons” in the United States. Brogan-style military boots were issued through World War II but eventually were abandoned for a higher combat boot which is used today. Today’s brogans can be anything from a traditional Timberland boot to a more fancy, thinner leather ankle-length oxford. This shoe style can be worn year-round. The thinner leathers and more detailed styles are more appropriate for business wear, while the more rugged styles are perfect for manual labor, casual wear, and even yard work.

Overcoats, Car Coats, & More

By now, we know you’ve mastered the art of business dressing and formalwear, but sometimes even the best dressed men make the common mistake of stopping there and not considering their outerwear. With temperatures dropping, it might seem like an easy idea to throw on your puffy, down jacket and head out the door to work or out on the town, but this oversight is definitely not the most appropriate or fashion forward option both in the workplace and at your special event. To keep warm and look put together (this is important when trying to secure that job promotion or snag that hot date) consider an overcoat or a car coat. An overcoat is traditionally made of wool, fitted, with long sleeves extending past your suit/shirt cuff, and extending anywhere from below the knee to above the ankle. If the length is off-putting for you, consider a car coat which is basically the same idea, yet ends higher than knee length (traditionally intended to not be occlusive while driving/riding in an automobile). There are many varieties of overcoats/car coats with style differing based on lapels, double vs single breasts, collars, cuffs, back vents, etc. Come in to Ted’s to check out our carefully curated selection today!

Not your work place suit

In recent years, menswear has seen a shift towards more eclectic and diverse styles. One way that men are embracing this change is by experimenting with non-traditional dress shirts to wear with their suits. While the classic white or light blue dress shirt will always be a staple, there are a number of non-traditional options that can add some personality and flair to your outfit. Here are some tips on how to wear a non-traditional dress shirt with your suit: Choose the Right Color and Pattern When selecting a non-traditional dress shirt, it’s important to choose a color and pattern that complements your suit. Solid colors like black, navy, or grey work well with patterned shirts, while patterned suits pair nicely with solid colored shirts. If you’re not sure which color or pattern to choose, start with a classic plaid or check pattern in a neutral color. Consider the Collar Style The collar style of your dress shirt can also make a big difference in the overall look of your outfit. For a more formal look, stick with a classic spread collar. A button-down collar can work well with a more casual suit or blazer. And if you’re feeling bold, a band collar or grandad collar can add some edge to your outfit. Pair with a Solid Tie When wearing a non-traditional dress shirt, it’s best to keep your tie simple and solid. This will help balance out the boldness of the shirt and prevent your outfit from looking too busy. Stick with a solid tie in a complementary color, or choose a tie that matches one of the colors in the shirt’s pattern. Keep the Rest of Your Outfit Simple To avoid looking like you’re trying too hard, keep the rest of your outfit simple and classic. Stick with a well-tailored suit in a neutral color, and avoid adding too many accessories or statement pieces. Let your non-traditional dress shirt be the focal point of your outfit. Own Your Look The most important thing when wearing a non-traditional dress shirt with your suit is to own your look. If you feel confident and comfortable in what you’re wearing, it will show. Don’t be afraid to take risks and try new things – after all, fashion is all about self-expression. In conclusion, wearing a non-traditional dress shirt with your suit can add some personality and flair to your outfit. Just remember to choose the right color and pattern, consider the collar style, pair with a solid tie, keep the rest of your outfit simple, and most importantly, own your look. With these tips in mind, you rule the day. -Isaac Pacheco Be Sure to follow us on Instagram,Facebook, Tik Tok and Twitter for all the latest trends https://www.instagram.com/teds_clothiers/ https://www.tiktok.com/@teds_clothiers https://www.facebook.com/tedsclothiers/ https://twitter.com/teds_clothiers
